MOUNT AYR — Moravia and Seymour won’t be advancing as teams to the second round of regionals, but they will both have individuals representing them.

Moravia’s Morgan Heaberlin and Seymour’s Thayda Houser both finished inside the top six individually at the first round of regionals at Mount Ayr Golf and Country Club to advance to the second round next week.

Heaberlin led Moravia, who finished sixth as a team with a score of 533, carding a 97 with some steady play and good scoring down the stretch.

“Morgan got off to a rough start today and I think playing with some really good players may have intimidated her a bit. She needs to realize that at her best she can include herself in that conversation,” Moravia head coach Darin Fisher said.

Heaberlin made up for a tough start where she was 14-over through her first five holes. After that, she battled her way to be 11-over in the last 13 holes. Only three girls played better over that stretch at the meet.

“She needs to capitalize on that great finish today and prepare the right way this week because the competition only gets better form here,” Fisher said. “She could have just ‘folded tent’ but she fought back hard and I am proud of her for that. The course was new to all the kids having not played here before so for the girls, and especially Morgan, she felt more comfortable and was able to score better the second time around.”

Rounded out the Lady Mohawks’ scoring was Charity Croteau (141), Megan Dueker (145) and Alexis Harrington (150). Elena Moreno (150) and Cady Armstrong (156) also recorded rounds for Moravia.

Houser snagged the final individual spot by one stroke by carding a 104 for the Warriorettes. Seymour finished fifth as a team with a 509.

Kaitlyn Couchman shot a 118, Zoe Joiner carded a 134 and Ori Trimble finished with a 153 to round out Seymour’s lineup.

East Union (424), Mount Ayr (436) and Central Decatur (471) all advance to the second round while Central Decatur’s Kristen Schaff took home individual honors with a 77.

Heaberlin and Houser advance to the second round of regionals at Atlantic on Monday at 10 a.m.
