Centerville may have lost their first game of the season last week but that didn’t stop Merrick Mathews from having another big week.

The sophomore helped Centerville to a 3-1 record last week while getting a pair of starts on the mound while batting cleanup in the lineup.

Mathews batted .588 at the plate with one double, five RBIs, two walks and two stolen bases. In a doubleheader against Davis County, Mathews went 7-for-8 with three RBIs.

He also had two starts on the mound, going 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA and six strikeouts in 10 innings.

On the season, Mathews is batting .390, which is second best on team, with eight RBIs. As a pitcher he is 5-0 with a 3.70 ERA and 13 strikeouts and no walks in 24 1/3 innings.

Mathews and No. 10 Centerville (11-1) head to Knoxville (4-16) for a doubleheader on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
