Centerville softball

Centerville's Elizabeth Zintz (7) tries to beat the Knoxville runner to the bag.

It’s tough to point to a cause, but the Redette defense was not locked in as Centerville suffered their first loss of the season in a 14-2 defeat to Knoxville on Thursday.

The Redettes either had a tough time dealing with Knoxville’s speed on the bases or a couple of bobbled balls and errant throws began to pile up on them.

Knoxville would go for three runs in the first before scoring five runs in the second and six runs in the third to build a 14-0 lead.

Centerville would get some traffic on the bases in the third inning with Taylor Shinn getting a RBI single before scoring herself on a wild pitch. Knoxville’s Ashlyn Finarty then shut the door to strand Redette runners on first and third to end the game.

Shinn, Cam Hendricks and Alyssa McElvain each had a hit for Centerville.

McElvain was given the loss after giving up 14 runs, five earned, on nine hits with two walks and one strikeout.

No. 12 Centerville (2-1) will face a tough turnaround as they travel to No. 13 Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (4-2) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
