Kayden Kauzlarich

Centerville's Kayden Kauzlarich rides Chariton's Trae Hall in his first match of the season.

CHARITON — The Big Reds picked up a split in their first South Central Conference dual of the season. Albia would grab a 45-27 win over Centerville before the Big Reds would bounce back with a 48-30 victory against Chariton.

Centerville once again had to try and dig themselves out of a deficit in their dual against Albia. They would give up 24 points to Albia due to open weights. The Big Reds would go 6-4 in their matches to come up short against their rivals from the north.

Brady Clark, Matthew Lewis and Nathaniel Genobana all picked up pins for the Big Reds. Lucas Henderson (Dec 3-1), Peyton Russell (Dec 3-2) and Gage Moorman (Dec 7-3) all battled to win close decisions.

After forfeits from open weights between Centerville and Chariton, the Chargers held a 24-18 advantage. Lewis, Genobana and Moorman all won by forfeit to go 2-0 on the night. Centerville would win five of the remaining seven matches to runaway with the win.

Henderson, Russell, Clark, Haskell and Kayden Kauzlarich claimed pins against their opponents. It was Kauzlarich’s first match of the season coming back from an ankle injury he suffered during football season. He is ranked No. 2 in Class 2A at 126 pounds.

Centerville will face one of their toughest tests of the season when they travel to Lee’s Summit, Missouri for their annual 24-team tournament on Friday and Saturday.
