The Bluegrass Conference Tournament tipped off on Saturday with first round action for the boys and girls. Moravia hosted a triple header that saw the Mohawks and Lady Mohawks advance to the quarterfinals.

SULLY — With sectionals just two weeks away, the Centerville grapplers looked like they are getting ready to peak at the right time. Centerville picked up a sweep in this quad with a 68-0 win over Baxter, 48-12 win over Lynnville-Sully and a 51-21 win over English Valleys-Tri County.
Coming off of their big win against Centerville, No. 4 Seymour was hoping to avoid any drop-off. It was business as usual as Seymour would take a 62-36 win over Ankeny Christian Academy.
This one didn’t take long to get out of hand. The second highest scoring team in the state showed little mercy in a 109-34 blowout of No. 4 Ankeny Christian Academy over Seymour.

Seymour’s Riley Jewett signed her letter of intent on Tuesday to continue her education and volleyball career at Southwestern Community College in Creston.
The brackets for the upcoming girls and boys Bluegrass Conference Tournament were recently released. Weather pending, a couple of area teams have a chance to go far in the annual tournament.

The Iowa Football Coaches Association (IFCA) recently released their list of players selected to their academic all-state teams. Among the list in Class 8-player, Moravia’s Hunter Arbogast.
Although it appeared this could be a light winter by Iowa standards, that has not been the case in recent days as Tuesday’s basketball schedule took a hit due to the wintery conditions.

The Redettes shouldn’t hang their heads after this one. Centerville gave No. 4 Seymour their toughest game of the season but their bid for an upset would come up short as the Warriorettes would hold off the Redettes to win 65-56.
For the first time this season, Centerville followed up a win with another win. The Big Reds continued their offensive roll from last week in a 73-39 trouncing over Seymour.

BLOOMFIELD — The Big Reds made their second trip to Davis County this season, returning with better results the second time around. Centerville picked up a pair of dual wins defeating Clarke 45-33 and Knoxville 46-36.

A couple of SCC foes met in Lakeview gym both looking for a much needed win to push them in the right direction for the second half of the season. It would be Centerville taking advantage of the situation pulling out a 71-59 win over Davis County on Tuesday.
Two meetings, two thrillers. These two rivals meet once again in a game where neither team could pull away from one another. As it turned out, 32 minutes wouldn't be enough as Centerville would shutout Davis County in the overtime period to earn a 77-64 win.

OTTUMWA — Indian Hills Head Basketball Coach Hank Plona was charged early Monday morning with operating while intoxicated after testing for more than twice the legal limit.
It’s usually not a good sign for the Warriorettes when head coach Paul Hinners has his suit jacket and tie ripped off within the first few minutes of the game, but that was the case as No. 4 Seymour dealt with some winter break rust. They would still find a way to execute enough to pull away…
After starting the season 3-0, Seymour was hoping the new year would help erase a long losing streak. Instead, the streak grew to six losses in a row after Seymour lost 70-42 on Friday against Lamoni.

With Centerville picking up their seventh win this season on Thursday night after defeating Grand View Christian 56-25, the Redettes now have their most wins before the winter break since 2010 while tying their total number of wins from last season.

GRINNELL — The Big Reds brought a nearly full squad to wrestle in five duals in Grinnell to finish up 2018 before the break. Centerville battle tough competition that were also sporting full lineups as they would go 1-4 as a team with their lone victory being 48-15 over English Valleys-Tri County.

With Moravia’s 58-50 win over Orient-Macksburg on Tuesday, the Mohawks completed an undefeated month of December going 8-0 to improve their season record to 9-1 entering the break.
The break doesn’t come at a better time for the Lady Mohawks, who are severely banged up with injuries. The good news is that they are entering the break on a high note after defeating Orient-Macksburg 50-42 on Tuesday night.
KNOXVILLE — After one quarter of play, it looked liked Centerville was on their way to getting a huge road win against the defending conference champions. Instead, Knoxville slowly worked their way back into the game with a barrage of threes sending them past the Big Reds late to win 76-71.
KNOXVILLE — The Redettes thought they’d have an advantage at three-point line. Centerville shoots 38.7 percent from three as a team while No. 12 Knoxville shoots just 25.5 percent. Instead, Knoxville caught fire from beyond the arc early to send the Panthers past the Redettes with a 58-39 win.

The Redettes knew how much a win in this game would mean for them and this season. With Centerville’s 69-42 over Moulton-Udell on Monday, the Redettes, now 6-3, will be above .500 going into the winter break for the first time since the 2015-16 season.

MOULTON — Last year, these two played three great games against one another including an overtime thriller in the playoffs. This year started with another close battle with Moulton-Udell coming out on top with a 38-31 win over Moravia.
MOULTON — The Moravia boys basketball team is officially off to their best start in the Quikstats era (since 2006). With their 66-52 win over Moulton-Udell on Saturday, Moravia is now 8-1 this season to mark their best start in more than a decade.

LEE’S SUMMIT — In what has become an annual measuring stick to see where the Big Red grapplers are at before the winter break, Centerville took the three hour bus ride south to participate in the Lee’s Summit Holiday Tournament in Missouri.
A couple of teams jostling for a spot near the top of the SCC engaged in a hard-fought game on Friday night. Clarke would come out on top with a 60-44 win over Centerville.

CHARITON — The Big Reds picked up a split in their first South Central Conference dual of the season. Albia would grab a 45-27 win over Centerville before the Big Reds would bounce back with a 48-30 victory against Chariton.

For the second game in a row, Moravia dug themselves into an early hole. The Mohawks were one again able to dig themselves out defeating Twin Cedars 51-48 after trailing by double digits.
It wasn’t looking good at the start. It was looking like another night of struggling to score for the Lady Mohawks. Instead, big rallies in the second and third quarter and a couple of scores in clutch time helped Moravia get their first win of the season defeating Twin Cedars 44-41.
LIBERTY CENTER — The Centerville grapplers won their first two duals of the season on Tuesday defeating Bedford/Lenox 62-12 and Southeast Warren/Melcher-Dallas 47-24.
