More than a quarter-million worth of bids were approved Monday by the Centerville School Board, as they finalized their construction projects for the summer.

One previously mentioned project was delayed, that being a new gymnasium floor at Lakeview Elementary School. Due to other projects in the gym, it won't be possible to replace the floor in the gymnasium this summer without interrupting the fall volleyball season for what would be a second straight year.

Rather than do that, the school board is delaying that project until next summer and will use the current floor for the upcoming indoor athletic seasons.

What was approved were a total of $293,708.06 in bids for nine different projects throughout the district this summer.

The board in all but one instance selected the lowest bidder for each project.

Approved were:

— Hopkins Roofing, of Pella, was the approved bidder for the new roof at the preschool building. Their bid was for $49,863. There was one other bidder: Academy Roofing and Sheet Metal Company, of Des Moines, for $166,000.

— Evers Construction, of Centerville, for sidewalk work at the preschool building (formerly Lincoln Elementary School). The bid was for $9,000. There was one other bidder: TK Concrete Inc., of Pella, for $22,095.

— Factory Direct Carpet, of Centerville, was approved to do new flooring at the Centerville School District's Administration building. The bid was for $8,685. There was one other bid received from J&L Flooring, of Centerville, for $9319.24.

— Southern Iowa Heating and Cooling, of Centerville, was awarded a contract for a new Lakeview Elementary School water heater. Their bid of $33,509 was not the lowest bid received, however. Oskaloosa-based Cunningham Inc. submitted a bit for the project of $31,313, but school board members decided to go with Southern Iowa Heating and Cooling because they are a local company that has given back to the community and school district.

— Christner Contracting Inc., of Ottumwa, was approved for new west gymnasium doors at Lakeview Elementary School, at a bid amount of $14,856. They submitted another bid using a different subcontractor that came to $29,539.

— For the Howar Middle School back road paving project, which will also add about 20 parking spaces, the board approved Centerville-based Evers Construction's bid of $98,700. One other company bid on the project, and that was TK Concrete Inc., of Pella, for $125,050.

— Anderson Ladd, Inc., of Adel, was approved to install a new gymnasium floor at Howar Middle School. Their bid was for $41,191.

— A project that will aim to stabilize the walls at Centerville High School near the auditorium entrance was approved. The only bidder was Anchored Walls, of Winterset, at $17,600.

— Two different bidders were approved for the Centerville maintenance facility/bus barn. Danley's Construction and Remodeling, of Bloomfield, was approved for the installation of 27 windows and two doors at a cost of $25,293.57. The other bid was for three new garage doors from Mast Overhead Doors Inc., of Bloomfield, for $9,568.06.
