Multiple people were injured, with one life-flighted, following a crash near Moravia Saturday.
On June 29 at approximately 8:45 p.m., the crash was reported at the intersection of Highway 5 and Highway J18 near Moravia. A 2005 Nissan Sentra driven by Jordan Taylor Samuels of Ottumwa was traveling eastbound on Highway J18 when she approached the intersection of Highway 5, according to a press release from the Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office.
Samuels was intending to turn north on to Highway 5 when she pulled in to the path of a southbound 2017 Chevrolet Pickup driven by Gunnar Sleeth of Exline. Samuels’ and Sleeth’s vehicle collided and Samuels was trapped inside her vehicle with multiple injuries.
Samuels had to be extricated from her vehicle by mechanical means and was transported to a Des Moines hospital by air ambulance.
A passenger in Samuels’ vehicle was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Centerville by Centerville Fire & Rescue Ambulance. Sleeth and a passenger in Sleeth’s vehicle were examined at the scene by medical personnel and released.
Samuels’ vehicle was sustained major damage and was considered a total loss. The Sleeth vehicle also sustained major damage.
The crash is currently under investigation by the Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol.
