Indian Hills Community College will celebrate the 88th annual commencement ceremony on the Centerville campus on Wednesday, May 15, at 7 p.m. in the Multipurpose Building.
Rick Mathews, a Centerville Junior College graduate and former Indian Hills baseball coach, will be the speaker for the event. Mathews is a Cincinnati, Iowa native who played baseball and basketball at CJC before moving on to Drake University where he got his bachelor’s degree while starring for the Bulldogs baseball team. Mathews then embarked on a coaching and scouting career that has spanned five decades.
He returned to Indian Hills to become the head baseball coach for the Falcons for six seasons, guiding them to the JUCO World Series in 1992 before joining the Colorado Rockies organization. He was the Rockies’ bullpen coach when they played the Boston Red Sox in the 2007 World Series. Mathews is currently a scout for the Rockies.
Around 75 graduates are expected to take part in the commencement ceremony. Prior to graduation, a special event recognizing the outstanding students on the Centerville campus for the 2018-19 academic year will be held. The announcement of the student award winners will begin at 4 p.m. in Building 15/16 and will be followed by a reception.
