BLOOMFIELD — Terry Petary, the man charged a year ago with running over two children near Drakesville, has pleaded guilty.

One of the children, Merlin Beechy, was killed. His brother, Nathan Beechy, was injured.

Authorities said at the time Petary fled the scene after running over the boys on 180th Street just west of Drakesville. They had been walking west on the eastbound side of the road when Petary struck them from behind.

Petary has previous convictions in 1996 and 1998 for driving while suspended, and was convicted of driving while barred in 2011. The latter earned him a two-year suspended prison sentence.

Petary could be sentenced to as much as 25 years in prison. Homicide by vehicle is a Class C felony, with a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. The other charges to which Petary pleaded guilty, serious injury by vehicle, failure to stop at the scene of an accident and possession of methamphetamine, are all Class D felonies with sentences of up to five years in prison.

Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 2.
