Graduates and friends of Udell School enjoyed a near perfect day at the Drake Avenue Christian Church in Centerville dining, reminiscing, reflecting, sharing stories (albeit somewhat embellished) with the anticipation of meeting again in 2020. Udell School closed its’ doors in 1959 when it consolidated with Moulton School.
Donna Koehler Mauer presided over the event. The dining tables and memorial table were beautifully decorated by Barbara Spurgeon Bare utilizing the school colors of purple and gold with fresh flower bouquets and table coverings. Max Batterson gave the blessing for the delicious meal which was prepared and served by members of Historical Preservation. Lawrence Powell led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the introduction of those attending. Lanny Doggett gave the Treasurer’s Report. A memorial display featured photos of those deceased during the past year, and they were recognized as Orris Powell 1948, Beverly Kendall Larkin 1951, Larry Whisler 1956, Lloyd Salladay 1959, Donnie Kirkland, Bruce Duty, Joan Hedgecock wife of Larry, and teacher Bernard Pugh.
Those in attendance this year were: Lois Cridlebaugh, widow of John who was a graduate of the class of 1939; Lawrence Powell 1946; Mary Francis Robertson Blew 1948 and daughter Julie Goode; David Koehler 1948 and wife Marilyn; Earl Powell 1951 and wife Beverly; Fern Engle Paris and husband Walt; Jack Walker 1952 and wife Betty; Jan Spurgeon (adopted by alumni) widow of Larry 1953; Shirley Morlan Morris 1953 and husband Marvin; Marilyn Salladay Hurt 1953, husband Frank and daughter Rhonda Moore; Elizabeth Rowan Garriott 1953; Barbara Spurgeon Bare 1954; Max Batterson 1954; Shirley Howard Hinerman 1955 and daughter Elaine Scuferer; Kathryn Clancy Batterson 1955; Loren Walker 1956 and wife Sheila; Burdetta Davis Weideman 1956 and daughter Cindy Henderson; Lanny Doggett 1958 and wife Iva; and, Donna Koehler Maurer 1959. Also in attendance were those who attended Udell School but transferred to Moulton School after Udell School’s closure in 1959 along with several who moved away prior to graduation were Kathy Cridlebaugh, Joan Kendall Henninger, JoEllen Porter, Jerry Hull, Gary Hull, Donnie Smith, Doyle & Irene Spring, Ruth Hopkins Daggett, Pam Wagner Marvin and husband Ron. Also in attendance was friend Deanna Withrow Brinegar.
Letters were read from graduates who could not attend. Donna Maurer presented trivia questions to the audience rewarding the winners with prizes. The benediction was given by Max Batterson after which the school song was sung. Many stayed afterwards to visit and get caught up with folks and folklore.

Next years’ Udell Alumni Reunion will be held on June 20, 2020, with doors opening at 11 a.m., and meal served at noon, at Drake Avenue Christian Church Fellowship Hall, 303 Drake Ave, Centerville, IA, 52544.
