Throwback Thursday: Spurgeon’s expanded in 1970

Spurgeon’s store on the west side of the square announced a major expansion in early 1970. They acquired the building directly to the south of their store and made major renovations to create additional sales space. In 1970, Spurgeon’s had been open for 40 years, according to the Iowegian. It lasted several more years before closing its doors. The buildings remain conjoined as Your Square Deal Furniture and Appliances. The Daily Iowegian and the Appanoose County Historical and Coal Mining Museum are partnering together to bring our readers “Throwback Thursday.” Watch each Thursday’s Daily Iowegian for a look at the past of Appanoose County.
