Throwback Thursday: Deep Beneath South Centerville

This is a picture from the 1920s of the Gypsum mine, 500 feet below the surface. Centerville was known to have some of the purest gypsum around. This photo shows Harry Luther, Laurence Breese (who built the radio they were testing) and John Molloy. The gypsum mine was located south of Howar Middle School. The mine suffered from excessive flooding and was eventually closed. The Daily Iowegian and the Appanoose County Historical and Coal Mining Museum are partnering together to bring our readers “Throwback Thursday.” Watch each Thursday’s Daily Iowegian for a look at the past of Appanoose County.
