Throwback Thursday: Coal was King

Throwback Thursday: Coal was King

For many years, from the late 1800s until the 1940s, coal mining was the biggest industry, employing thousands of Appanoose County residents. Finding enough people to work was so difficult, that mines advertised in Europe to bring people here to work in the mines. That shaped the history of our community as a true melting pot of diverse cultures. The Daily Iowegian and the Appanoose County Historical and Coal Mining Museum are partnering together to bring our readers “Throwback Thursday.” Watch each Thursday’s Daily Iowegian for a look at the past of Appanoose County.
