The Alba Community Choir will be presenting their 13th annual concert tour and continuing their tradition of presenting fine choral music to music patrons of Southern Iowa and Northern Missouri.

The first performance will be presented on Thursday April 4 at the Trinity United Methodist Church on East Benton Avenue in Albia at 7 p.m. The second will be part of the Centerville Concert Association season and will be at the First United Methodist Church located a block North of the Historical Centerville Square on Sunday, April 7 at 3 p.m.

The title of the 2019 show is “I Sing Because I'm Happy” and is under the direction of Paul Peterson, a retired vocal music teacher from Albia, who has conducted many vocal festivals and shows across the state of Iowa.

The concert will feature a wide variety of music, a cappella and accompanied. The repertoire includes several spirituals in various styles, a Bach Chorale with instrumental accompaniment, several Broadway show tunes, several swing and jazz selections, a salute to the Armed Forces and a medley of songs from the Broadway musical “Les Miserables.” In addition to the full mixed choir, the women's choir will present three selections and the men's choir will sing three songs in the Barbershop style.

The adult community chorus consists of forty one dedicated members, mostly from the Albia area, with additions from Centerville, Corydon, Bloomfield, Oskaloosa, Ottumwa, Eddyville and Moulton. The group rehearses two and one half hours each Monday at Albia High School starting in January and includes music educators and talented musicians from many walks of life. The director, Paul Peterson, accompanists Cynthia Amsden and Nancy Grady, trap set, Misty Smith, and the members of the group are unpaid for their efforts, but have the joy and aesthetic reward of music performance.

There is no admission charge and the public is invited to attend both the Albia and Centerville performances where a free will donation will be taken. The monies collected will be used to fund vocal music scholarships at Albia Community High School. Take advantage of this opportunity to enjoy a choral performance by area musicians on Thursday, April 4 in Albia and/or Sunday, April 7 in Centerville.
