CENTERVILLE — ALBIA — The 11th-ranked (Class 1A) Albia boys soccer team made sure it wouldn’t be the first team to fall to Centerville, as the Blue Demons vanquished the winless Big Reds 3-1 Tuesday.
“We started off strong,” said Centerville coach Tino Terrones. “I felt we needed to accomplish that to compete with Albia.”
In the huddle before the game, Terrones set a goal for his team to score within the first five minutes of play. The goal matured into a concrete reality when junior Michael Bieber scored within the determined time frame off a corner kick by senior Nick McCann.
Affronted, the Blue Demons bounced back to score at the 35-minute mark and the two teams remained tied at 1 when halftime arrived.
Although the Big Reds’ Grant Walker and Payton Kauzlarich were able to neutralize Albia’s Caleb Gray, the Blue Demons teammates, namely Skyler Bettis Colton Dorpinghaus compensated for Gray’s lack of offense with some offense of their own. Bettis accounted for two of Albia’s goals while Kauzlarich was the source of the third.
Despite the loss, Terrones extolled his goalkeeper for his impressive performance.
“Quinn McClurg did a fantastic job in goal,” Terrones said. “He recorded 15 saves.”
The coach said the Big Reds are still trying to put their “team puzzle” together.
“I set a goal and they reached it,” Terrones said, “so my goal for them now is to get two wins to end this week of play, and get us on the winning track.”
Centerville plays host to Oskaloosa today in a non-conference match. Meanwhile, Albia plays Grinnell Friday in non-conference action.
