Girls open season with win

The Centerville Redettes girls golf team started their 2014 campaign with a first place finish at their home triangular meet on Tuesday.

Centerville recorded a team total of 208 strokes to finish first amongst Chariton and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont. The Redettes were 29 strokes better than Chariton, who finished second in the triangular.

Redette golfers swept the medalist and runner-up medalist honors, as Marissa Hunt and Molly Heffron put together the best two scores on Tuesday. Hunt recorded 50 shots while Heffron ended the day with 52.

Centerville’s Leah Scott, Bailey Johnson and Camryn Moorman all finished the day with 53 strokes. Erisa McGill carded 63.

“I was very proud of the way the girls played today for the first meet of the year,” interim coach Matt Kovacevich said. “All the girls improved their score average from last year. If we continue to practice hard on our game we could have a makings of a great spring.”

The Redettes golf team will be off until Tuesday when they will travel to Bloomfield to play Moravia and Davis County in another triangular.

The Iowegian wants readers to think about the solicitation ordinance that will prevent groups or individuals from entering a roadway to solicit money. The Centerville City Council in June by a 5-0 vote passed the first reading of just such an ordinance. Public pressure and during a subsequent special meeting, the council voted 3-2 to table the ordinance. A second special meeting to discuss the solicitation ordinance is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 at City Hall. So, the question of the week is, "Do you or do you not support the ordinance to prevent solicitation of funds in city streets?"
