Reds win four events in first outdoor meet

---- — ALBIA — The Centerville Big Reds opened their outdoor track season with four wins on Tuesday in Albia.

Both the Centerville Big Reds and Redettes track teams were in action at Albia Tuesday. The boys competed in a quadrangular meet against Albia, Oskaloosa and Chariton while the girls competed against Prairie City, Pella Christian, Chariton, Albia and Twin Cedars.

The Big Reds went home third out of their list of teams while the Redettes took fourth place overall.

Big Red Graydon Schmdit took home first in the 110 meter hurdles, timing in at 15.84 seconds. Schmidt was also involved in the distance medley team for the Reds. Schmidt, along with Brent Jackson, Garrett Moorman and Garrett McGrann, took first place in the event with a time of 3:52.78.

The Reds also picked up two wins from the field events, as Avery Hutton took first in the shot put and Michael Firkins took first in the discus throw. Hutton recorded a throw of 40’1.5” in the shot put while Firkins recorded a 135’3.25” toss in the discus.

The boys shuttle hurdle relay team took second place in their event. Moorman, Kolton Gonnerman, Noah Coatney and Schmidt recorded a time of 1:05.62 in that event.

Moorman finished third in the 110 meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 16.55 seconds. Brett Bauman also took a third place result in the long jump, with a distance of 5’6”. Rounding out the list of top-three finishers for Centerville was Avery Hutton, recorded a throw of 107’5.25” in the boys discus throw.

The Redettes did not secure a first place result on Tuesday, however, they were represented amongst the top-three finishers in nine events.

Cassidy Schacher finished second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:45.

The Redettes’ 4x400 meter relay team recorded a second place finish. Schacher, Maddie Newland, Madi Moorman and Peyton Kauffman recorded a time of 4:46.72 for the runner-up spot in the event.

Centerville’s Mikala White, Rachel Valentine, Libby Sebolt and Schacher recorded a time of 4:50.33 to finish second in the girls’ distance medley.

Rounding up runner-up finishes for the girls was Rachel Valentine, who recorded a discus throw of 112’1.25” to take second place.

Centerville’s Hanna Sheston recorded a time of 13:00.29 in the 3,000 meter run, good for third place overall. The Redettes’ White finished third in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.80 seconds. Taylor Lawson would recorded a throw of 32’9.5” to finish third in the girls shot put.

The Redettes’ would round out their top-three finishes on Tuesday with two relay teams taking third place in their respective events.

The 4x200 relay team, featuring Alyssa Barger, Taylor Hendrick, Caylea Housh and Stephanie Grenko, finished third with a time of 2:08.22. The 800 meter sprint medley team finished third in their event, with Kauffman, Housh, Grenko and Sebolt combining for a time of 2:15.63.

The Redettes are in Albia this evening while the Big Reds will host the Rosenbaum Quad tonight at Paul Johnson Field.
