---- — OTTUMWA — The Centerville Big Reds definitely brought their bats to Ottumwa Monday night.

Centerville smashed 13 hits in the 17-9 victory against the Ottumwa Bulldogs of Class 4-A.

“Best game with bats to date,” Centerville head coach Bill Huisman said. “Hit the ball hard all night. Grant and Payton were very effective in relief this evening.”

Payton Kauzlarich picked up the win after throwing 2.2 innings for two strikeouts and allowing no hits or runs to close out the game.

Jared Armington went 2-for-2 from the plate with three RBIs. Michael Firkins went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. The Big Reds’ Kolton Gonnerman ended the game with a double, three runs and two RBIs from his 3-for-4 performance.

Centerville opened the game with a six-run first inning. Ottumwa would respond with four more runs in their half of the first and then three more in the bottom of the second to take a 7-6 lead.

Casual scoring for both sides would give the Reds an 11-9 lead heading into the seventh inning. There, the Big Reds would smash another six runs home to take a commanding 17-9 lead and the eventual win.

Centerville (3-2) had started their South Central Conference opener in Albia on Tuesday. They trailed 2-1 in the top of the fifth when rains came into the area. The suspended game will resume on June 10 at 5:30 p.m. in Albia.
