---- — MT AYR — The Wayne Lady Falcons continue to improve, as they took second in a tough conference meet held on May 5.

The Wayne girls track squad finished second with 84 team points behind Interstate 35, Truro, who was the conference champion with 109 points.

“I am very pleased with our results from the Pride of Iowa conference track meet,” Wayne girls track coach Bart Elliott said. “We are in a very tough conference for track. Our conference is well represented at the state meet every year. So, to score 82 points and finish second out of a 12 team conference is very exciting.”

The Lady Falcons had four conference championships on the night. Breanna Fortune claimed the POI title in the shot put and discus as well as their 4x200 and 4x400 meter relay teams.

The 4x400 meter relay team won the conference title by a mere three-hundredths of a second. Katelynn Campbell, Kaylee Henry, Mandie Gassman and Olivia Byrns made up that team, recording a time of 4:25.53.

The Lady Falcons’ 4x200 meter relay team also took a tight victory to claim the conference title. The team of Karna Hampton, Shania Austin, Mandie Gassman and Demi Austin finished in a time of 1:56.08, beating Martesndale-St. Marys by 22-hundredths of a second. The time for the team was their best of the season.

Fortune recorded throws of 34’8.5” in the shot put and 103’7” in the discus to claim the conference title in both events. In shot put, it’s Fortune’s third straight conference title.

“The girls track program has made great strides in the last five years,” Elliott said. “To go form 12th place in my first year as head coach, to placing second this season is very gratifying for our team. We definitely have a talented group, but they have also put in hours of extra work in the weight room, going to camps and attending speed and agility.”

The boys’ track squad from Wayne was absent of any individual conference titles, however they managed to take fourth place with 54 team points. Mt. Ayr took the conference boys’ track title with 148 points.

Both the boys’ and girls’ track teams will be in Mt Ayr again today for the district track meet, which determines the list of athletes who will be competing at the state tournament in Des Moines next week.

There, Wayne will face a lot of the same competition they faced at the POI conference meet. Six of the 12 teams the Wayne track teams faced on May 5 will be at the meet. Bedford, Central Decatur, Mt. Ayr, Lenox, East Union and Nodaway Valley will all be representing the POI conference with Wayne. Also at the district meet will be Interstate 35, Southeast Warren, Southwest Valley, Seymour, Orient-Macksburg and Martsendale-St. Marys.

The meet will begin at 4 p.m. In class 1-A, the top place winner in each event at the district meet will automatically qualify for the state meet. After that, the state will compile all of the district results in the class and select the 12 best times that didn’t already qualify will finish out each event’s field at the state track meet.
