Reds second amongst tough competition

CHARITON — The Centerville Big Reds were second at the Charger Invitational on Saturday, a meet regarded as a state tournament preview meet.

Five teams were all within three strokes of one another at the end of the first nine holes in the competitive meet.

Centerville’s Blake Dabney was the runner-up medalist, carding 73 on the day. He was just one stroke behind Creston’s Carson Whittington, who was the meet medalist after shooting a round of 72.

“[Blake’s] put together some good tournaments,” Centerville head coach Mike Carney said. “We can really be tough. We’re able to contend for a title, but we have just to have play our best ball.”

Centerville’s Alex Moorman, Jake Hargrave and Brad Irwin rounded out the top-four scorers for the Big Reds, shooting rounds of 77, 78 and 79, respectively. Freshmen Brett Kauzlarich and Colton Belloma also competed at the Lakeview Golf and Country Club, ending their days with rounds of 81 and 83, respectively.

“I was pleased with the performance of the team as a whole,” Carney said. “We had four scores in the 70s under [subpar] conditions. We played probably four of the top teams in the state at this particular tournament. At the end of the first nine there were five teams within three shots of one another. It was a good tournament.”

Centerville will be in Chariton again today for the South Central Conference golf meet. The meet was originally scheduled for Monday but was postponed to today due to rain. Action is set to begin at 10 a.m. On Friday, they host sectionals at The Preserve at Rathbun Lake beginning at 10 a.m.

The district tournament will be at Stone Creek Golf Club in Williamsburg on Friday, May 23 at 10 a.m.
