Reds see two relay wins at Fairfield

FAIRFIELD — The Centerville Big Reds had two relay teams take top honors at the Brookhart-Crew Relays on Monday.

Garrett Moorman, Kolton Gonnerman, Garrett McGrann and Graydon Schmidt were the four athletes involved in both of the relay victories.

In the 4x200 meter relay event, Centerville took first with a time of 1:33.10. To close the night, Moorman, McGrann, Schmidt and Gonnerman combined for a winning time of 3:31.99 in the 4x400 meter relay.

The Big Reds’ Michael Firkins took first place in the discus throw, recording a best toss of 149’6”.

Schmidt added second place finishes in the 200 meter dash, with a time of 23.10 seconds, and the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.07 seconds. Gonnerman took second place in the long jump, with a best jump of 19’6”.

The Redettes had four third place finishes to highlight their night.

Freshman Peyton Kauffman finished third in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:05.91. Stephanie Grenko took third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:15.89.

Rachel Valentine finished third in both the discus and shot put events. Valentine recorded a discus throw of 117’5” and a shot put throw of 34’0.5”.

The Centerville Big Reds and Redettes will be competing at the South Central Conference meet in Davis County tonight, starting at 5 p.m. After that, Centerville will travel to Mt. Pleasant for the state qualifying district meet on Thursday, May 15.

The Iowegian wants readers to think about the solicitation ordinance that will prevent groups or individuals from entering a roadway to solicit money. The Centerville City Council in June by a 5-0 vote passed the first reading of just such an ordinance. Public pressure and during a subsequent special meeting, the council voted 3-2 to table the ordinance. A second special meeting to discuss the solicitation ordinance is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 at City Hall. So, the question of the week is, "Do you or do you not support the ordinance to prevent solicitation of funds in city streets?"
