Former Redettes' college teams qualifies for districts

A former Centerville Redette was part of her team’s regional softball title and will be competing for a chance at a national tournament spot.

Chelsey Banks contributed to the Southeastern Community College’s Region XI softball title earned on Saturday.

Southeastern came into the tournament as the No. 3 seed, but defeated Muscatine once and Iowa Western twice en route to their title.

So far this year, Banks has contributed with a .276 batting average with 29 hits, three home runs and 14 RBIs.

Southeastern will travel to the Region 16 champion, Jefferson College, in Hillsboro, Mo. on May 2-3 for the district title. The winner of said title will advance to the NJCAA Division I Softball National Championship held in St. George, Utah on May 14-17.

The Iowegian wants readers to think about the solicitation ordinance that will prevent groups or individuals from entering a roadway to solicit money. The Centerville City Council in June by a 5-0 vote passed the first reading of just such an ordinance. Public pressure and during a subsequent special meeting, the council voted 3-2 to table the ordinance. A second special meeting to discuss the solicitation ordinance is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 at City Hall. So, the question of the week is, "Do you or do you not support the ordinance to prevent solicitation of funds in city streets?"
