Reds best Albia at home meet

The Centerville Big Reds outshot the Albia Blue Demons by 19 strokes at the North/South Classic, Centerville’s home invitational.

A wet, cold and windy day at the Manhattan Golf Club didn’t keep Centerville’s Alex Moorman from firing off a two-under-par round.

Moorman’s round of 70 was four strokes better than the three way tie for second score of 74 turned in by Putnam County’s Cody Quint, Central Decatur’s Noah Simon and Albia’s Tyler Maddison.

Weather conditions for the golfers began with damp, cold and windy conditions with occasional sun for the first nine holes. Things would deteriorate further for the back nine, with periodic rain showers tormenting golfers further.

“All in all I was happy with our performance,” Big Reds’ coach Mike Carney said. “Sometimes when you have bad weather like this you lose control of what you’re doing out there. I think Alex showed mental toughness playing the back nine.”

Centerville’s Jake Hargrave barely missed a runner-up medalist spot, ending the day with a score of 75. Brad Irwin and Blake Dabney carded 77 and 78, respectively, to round out the top-four scorers for Centerville.

Freshmen Colton Belloma and Brett Kauzlarich ended their rounds with scores of 83 and 88, respectively.

Centerville will travel to Moravia today for the Mohawk Classic at The Preserve Golf Course at Honey Creek Resort. The Moravia Mohawks and the Wayne Falcons will also be competing at the invitational that draws some premiere talent around the southern part of Iowa. The meet will tee off at 12:30 p.m.
