Reds pick up four runner-ups at Mt. Pleasant

MT. PLEASANT — The Centerville Big Reds had four runner-up finishes on Thursday, April 17, while they finished fifth out of eight teams in the team race, at the 2014 Dennis White Relays.

The Big Reds’ Graydon Schmidt picked up two runner-up finishes individually, with second place results in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Schmidt would also lead off the 4x400 meter relay team that finished second with a time of 3:36.24. Also getting batons in that event were Garrett Moorman, Garrett McGrann and Kolton Gonnerman.

Rounding out the runner-up finishes for the Big Reds was Michael Firkins, who was second in the discus throw, recording a toss of 147’3”.

Centerville had no qualifiers for the Drake Relays held over the weekend. The Big Reds will be in action again in Bloomfield tomorrow at 5 p.m.

The Iowegian wants readers to think about the solicitation ordinance that will prevent groups or individuals from entering a roadway to solicit money. The Centerville City Council in June by a 5-0 vote passed the first reading of just such an ordinance. Public pressure and during a subsequent special meeting, the council voted 3-2 to table the ordinance. A second special meeting to discuss the solicitation ordinance is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 at City Hall. So, the question of the week is, "Do you or do you not support the ordinance to prevent solicitation of funds in city streets?"
