Centerville takes second in Albia

ALBIA — The Fairfield Trojans shot a better round overall on Tuesday. However, it was Centerville’s Alex Moorman who took the medalist honors at the Albia Invitational.

Moorman rebounded from a score of 40 on the first trip around the nine-hole golf course at Albia Golf and Country Club. He would come back to shoot a 32 on the second go-around, finishing at an even par on the day. Fairfield’s Nick Higgins shot the next best score, four strokes behind Moorman.

Overall, Fairfield took the title at the invitational, carding a total of 317. Centerville was 14 strokes back in second place, with a team total of 331 strokes.

Centerville’s Blake Dabney, Brett Kauzlarich and Jake Hargrave joined Moorman to round out the Big Reds’ top-four individuals on the day. Dabney, Kauzlarich and Hargrave turned in totals of 78, 90 and 91, respectively.

The runner-up finish at Tuesday’s invitational comes after they were first in Schuyler County on Thursday, April 10. There, the Big Reds bested second place finishing LaPlata (Mo.) by 24 strokes. Moorman and Dabney tied for the co-medalist honors at that meet, carding 74.

Centerville traveled to Bloomfield yesterday. They’ll compete in Pleasantville on Monday for a 4 p.m. meet.

The Iowegian wants readers to think about the solicitation ordinance that will prevent groups or individuals from entering a roadway to solicit money. The Centerville City Council in June by a 5-0 vote passed the first reading of just such an ordinance. Public pressure and during a subsequent special meeting, the council voted 3-2 to table the ordinance. A second special meeting to discuss the solicitation ordinance is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 at City Hall. So, the question of the week is, "Do you or do you not support the ordinance to prevent solicitation of funds in city streets?"
