Redettes fall in tight SCC bout

The Centerville Redettes fell in the softball version of the Battle of Highway 5 on Monday.

The Albia Lady Dees defeated Centerville 2-1 in a seven-inning South Central Conference clash, as the Redettes dropped to 0-2 against SCC opponents.

Albia’s Sydney Weldon scored both of the runs for Albia. The first came in the very first pitch of the ball game, which she hit a line drive home run over the left field fence at Redette Field.

Centerville’s pitcher, Kiley Micetich, recovered quickly, though. She needed just six pitches to get through the rest of the inning, forcing Albia’s Makenzie Griffin and Emma Dinneen to groundouts and Lexi VanPolen to a fly-out to end the inning.

Both sides would go scoreless until Centerville tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

Tayler Jewett reached first base on a single. A sacrifice by Sara Howard would move her over to second base before Jewett ultimately went to third on a passed ball.

Jewett scored when Lexi Riggall was caught in a rundown between first and second.

Albia would respond with a lead-off triple by Weldon. She would score on a sacrifice fly to centerfield to move the Lady Dees ahead 2-1.

Centerville would move Libby Sebolt to second base in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn’t bring across a game-tying or go-ahead run.

Centerville (9-7, 0-2 in SCC) traveled to Melecher-Dallas yesterday and will host Davis County tonight at 7 p.m.

The Iowegian wants readers to think about the solicitation ordinance that will prevent groups or individuals from entering a roadway to solicit money. The Centerville City Council in June by a 5-0 vote passed the first reading of just such an ordinance. Public pressure and during a subsequent special meeting, the council voted 3-2 to table the ordinance. A second special meeting to discuss the solicitation ordinance is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 at City Hall. So, the question of the week is, "Do you or do you not support the ordinance to prevent solicitation of funds in city streets?"

A. I support the ordinance
B. I do not support the ordinance
C. Not sure
