Huisman runner-up for NCOY

JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — Centerville Big Reds head coach Bill Huisman was the runner-up in the National High School Athletic Coaches Association’s national baseball coach of the year award.

Huisman attend the banquet on June 18. He was one of eight finalists from around the country nominated for the award.

Huisman was selected for the honor by the state’s high school coaches’ association. The selection is based on career longevity, service to high school athletics, honors, championship years and winning percentage.

Huisman intends on retiring after this baseball season, ending a 38 year coaching career at Centerville High School.

Winning the award was Brent Payne, from Oklahoma. Other finalists for the award were Leo Veleas, of Connecticut, Pete Meyer, of Illinois, Jeff Gumm, of Kentucky, Tim McDonald, of Michigan, Ryan Michael Brantl, of North Dakota, and Marc Hilton, of New Mexico.

The Iowegian wants readers to think about the solicitation ordinance that will prevent groups or individuals from entering a roadway to solicit money. The Centerville City Council in June by a 5-0 vote passed the first reading of just such an ordinance. Public pressure and during a subsequent special meeting, the council voted 3-2 to table the ordinance. A second special meeting to discuss the solicitation ordinance is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 at City Hall. So, the question of the week is, "Do you or do you not support the ordinance to prevent solicitation of funds in city streets?"
