Centerville Big Reds shut out Roosevelt

DES MOINES — The Centerville baseball team closed out its majestic regular season in impressive fashion, shutting out Class 4-A opponent Des Moines Roosevelt 7-0 Tuesday.

Starting pitcher Michael Starcevich got the win on the mound for the Big Reds.

He allowed two hits while striking out five and issuing one walk. Grant Walker and Jared Armington tossed the final three innings for the Big Reds.

“Starcevich, Brett Kauzlarich and Armington all really looked good on the mound,” Centerville coach Bill Huisman said.

The Big Reds offensive attack could accurately be described as a collective effort with no batter recording more than one hit. Walker blasted a double and drove in two runs and Michael Firkins and Hunter Cowan each had a double.

Centerville (28-7, 19-0) plays host to Chariton in the first round of the Class 3-A, District 12 tournament at 7 p.m. Friday. If the Big Reds are victorious, they will remain at home for the district championship at 7 p.m. Monday.

Public pressure and during a subsequent special meeting, the council voted 3-2 to table the ordinance. A second special meeting to discuss the solicitation ordinance is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 at City Hall. So, the question of the week is, "Do you or do you not support the ordinance to prevent solicitation of funds in city streets?"
