Centerville sees six runner-ups at Osky

OSKALOOSA — The Centerville Big Reds and Redettes track teams combined for six second-place finishes at the 87th annual Oskaloosa Relays on Saturday.

The Big Reds took five of the sixth runner-up spots. Michael Firkins led the way, with second place finishes in the shot put and discus events. Firkins recorded a throw of 44’9.5” in the shot put and a throw of 136’9” in the discus throw.

Centerville’s Kolton Gonnerman finished second in the long jump, with a best distance of 19’6.25”. Teammate Graydon Schmidt was close by, recording a third place jump of 19’6”, just a quarter-of-an-inch from Gonnerman’s best effort.

Schmidt finished second in the 200 meter dash, recording a time of 23.88 seconds, which was just .15 seconds behind event winner Blake Hughes, from Williamsburg.

The Big Reds’ 4x200 meter relay team rounded out the top-two finishers for the Big Reds. They were second, behind Williamsburg, with a time of 1:35.21.

Rachel Valentine was the lone Redette to take a second place finish on Saturday. She was second with a 33-foot throw in the shot put.

The Redettes are in Eddyville today while the Big Reds are going to Mt. Pleasant.

The Iowegian wants readers to think about the solicitation ordinance that will prevent groups or individuals from entering a roadway to solicit money. The Centerville City Council in June by a 5-0 vote passed the first reading of just such an ordinance. Public pressure and during a subsequent special meeting, the council voted 3-2 to table the ordinance. A second special meeting to discuss the solicitation ordinance is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 at City Hall. So, the question of the week is, "Do you or do you not support the ordinance to prevent solicitation of funds in city streets?"
