Reds suffer two slim losses

The Centerville Big Reds soccer team has suffered two close losses in overtime to start their season.

On Monday, the Reds lost 3-2 in overtime to Fairfield at home. On Tuesday, the Reds traveled to Mt. Pleasant where they would fall in overtime 1-0.

Fairfield’s Solomon Constant scored first on Monday to take an early 1-0 lead.

Centerville’s Nick McCann would give Centerville a 2-1 lead with back-to-back goals coming seven minutes apart.

Fairfield would tie the game at 2-2 with a goal by Constant with four minutes left in the game. A scoreless end to the second half would send the game into overtime. There, Constant would nab a hat trick with a goal five minutes into the first overtime period, giving Fairfield a 3-2 win.

“For our first game, I felt the boys played very well,” Centerville coach Tino Terrones said. “A lot of effort was shown in this game. In the beginning of the season, I was a little worried if we were going to play together to be a scoring threat. Well, we didn’t have trouble in that area, as seniors Nick McCann and Garrett Moorman, along with junior Michael Bieber created many opportunities to score. We are still a little off on putting the ball on goal. I was happy with the amount of shots our boys attempted. As the season continues, this will improve.”

Centerville (0-2) will be at home against Albia at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
