Big Reds tennis wins opener

The Centerville Big Reds netters picked up a 6-3 win over the Mt. Pleasant Panthers to open the season at home on Tuesday.

The Big Reds’ Devon Glosser, Michael Starcevich, Steven Cochran and Spencer Varner all picked up singles wins.

Glosser recorded an 8-6 victory over the Panthers’ Zach Schmitz. Starcevich won by an 8-3 score over Tyler Pace while Steve Cochran took a 8-7 match win over Colton Schinstock. Varner rounded out the singles victories with an 8-2 win over Ben Zihlman.

In doubles, the teams of Glosser/Daniel Berja and Brady Sweet/Varner picked up wins.

“I thought we played really well tonight,” Centerville head coach Tyler Baze said. “Everyone who played won tonight either in singles, doubles or both. Spencer stepped up for his first meet and got two big wins.”

Centerville (1-0) will open South Central Conference play with Clarke at home today at 4:30 p.m.

“Clarke is coming Thursday and they are the conference favorite so we look to give them a run for their money,” Baze said.

The Iowegian wants readers to think about the solicitation ordinance that will prevent groups or individuals from entering a roadway to solicit money. The Centerville City Council in June by a 5-0 vote passed the first reading of just such an ordinance. Public pressure and during a subsequent special meeting, the council voted 3-2 to table the ordinance. A second special meeting to discuss the solicitation ordinance is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 at City Hall. So, the question of the week is, "Do you or do you not support the ordinance to prevent solicitation of funds in city streets?"
