Seymour victorious

It was Homecoming in Seymour Friday night, but early on Moravia looked like the team that would be celebrating.

The Mohawks capitalized on a bad punt snap to take an early 6-0 lead. The visitors maintained the momentum throughout the first period, blocking two Warrior punts to set up excellent field position inside Seymour’s 20 yard line. The Warrior defense was able to hold on the first threat and Jalen Jones intercepted a Mohawk pass to quash the second opportunity.

In the second quarter, Cody Jellison hit Brady McElvain on a 50-yard strike to reverse the field position and the momentum as the Warriors found the end zone twice before the half to take a 14-0 lead.

The Mohawks took the opening kickoff of the second half, drove down and scored to pull within two, 14-12. Two possessions later, Tanner Banks answered back for the Warriors with a 37-yard touchdown run. Then just minutes later, Banks again scored from 23 yards out, after recovering a Moravia fumble. Seymour lead 26-12 going into the fourth quarter and were able to secure the 32-18 victory despite a late Mohawk kickoff return for a score.

Offensively, Banks paced the ground game with 139 yards and a score in 25 carries. Jellison had 63 yards in 21 attempts and three touchdowns. Brady McElvain contributed 30 yards on the ground and a 50-yard reception to the effort.

On the defense, Quinten Merritt made 12 tackles as Josh Ford had another 11. Dillon Horton had nine stops in the contest and McElvain made eight. Jalen Jones made five tackles and two timely interceptions for the defense, as Banks’s third quarter fumble recovery for the touchdown was the difference maker.

Seymour will travel to Melcher next Friday to face the Saints. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
