Despite an energetic Moravia volleyball team, the Centerville Redettes came out on top in three games on Thursday night.
“I was very pleased with how our kids came back after a tough defeat on Tuesday. We played with a lot of poise and character. We were focused and determined to make plays and we did just that. I thought that we were able to take Moravia out of their offense with our serving and we were able to then take advantage of them not being able to run their offense,” said Coach Tom Hill.
Centerville was led by Olivia Starcevich and Kaylee Mehrhoff each with 12 kills. The two also led the team in aces. Mehrhoff had five while Starcevich added four in the match.
“Kaylee (Mehrhoff) had a really solid performance tonight with her serving and hitting. She played with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. Teams have been keying on stopping her at the net for most of the season. It was great to see her play and have fun. Olivia (Starcevich) has really stepped up lately. Tonight she was very solid with her serving and her hitting just continues to improve,” said Hill.
Shelbey Spurgeon had 10 digs and Danielle Widmar had 26 assists on the night.
“Senior Karis Overturf really had a nice game tonight also. We made a change tonight where she would play a middle back position. She did a nice job with her defense making some nice passes and her serving was solid,” commented Hill.
The Redettes stand with a 10-11 overall record. They have had one of the most successful seasons in a number of years at Centerville. “Beating Moravia was a big feat for the program. It was Moravia’s senior night and Coach Jerald Harter always has his team ready to play us,” said Hill. “Each game could have gone either way, we just made a few more plays than they did tonight. The Moravia Volleyball program is always solid and has high expectations for their kids. For our team to go into their place and win three in a row was another positive step in the right direction for our program,” said Hill.
The Redettes will be in Albia on Oct. 14 competing in the South Central Conference tournament.
They will be at home for the Redette tournament on Oct. 18.
The Redettes will face Clarke in the first round of the state tournament on Oct. 27 at Osceola.
