The Centerville Redettes were defeated by Clarke on Sept. 25 and by Chariton on Sept. 30.
In the match up against Clarke Centerville lost the match in four games with scores of 25-20, 21-25, 17-25 and 17-25.
“Tonight was very rewarding and very disappointing at the same time. It was the last regular season match that our seniors would play at home and it was a chance for our program to take another step in a positive direction in an already rewarding season,” said coach Tom Hill.
Danielle Widmar had 26 assists while Olivia Starcevich led the team in kills with eight followed by Morgan Thomas with six and Kaylee Mehrhoff added five.
“Again Olivia led us in kills with eight. I have been very impressed with her being a competitor and making things happen for our team. Morgan was also very effective tonight with six kills. I have been impressed with how Morgan has continued to develop her confidence and overall play at the net,” said Hill.
Shelbey Spurgeon had 11 digs for Centerville while Karis Overturf had seven.
“I felt that our kids played with some extra energy tonight, something that we didn’t really have against Albia earlier in the week. We were able to win the first game, but struggled the rest of the match trying to find a good chemistry on the court,” said Hill.
Clarke started rather slow, but was able to make more plays throughout the match. The two teams were very equal teams, and the Redettes needed to be able to make plays under pressure. Clarke just made more plays then the Redettes.
“Losing five seniors like Overturf, Bridget Sidles, Melanie Hermon, Lacey Myers and Thomas will be tough for our program. They each have made a lot of sacrifices and put in a lot of hard work over the past four years. During that time their roles have changed time and time again. They have always shown a lot of character and class, always willing to do what is best for the team and the program. It takes kids like this to build a program to make it successful. In trying to develop our program, I owe a lot to them,” said Hill.
In the match against Chariton the Redettes fell in five games with scores of 24-26, 25-19, 21-25, 25-17 and 8-15.
Mehrhoff and Starcevich led the team with nine kills each while Meggie Blozovich added four kills.
Widmar had 26 assists while Mehrhoff had nine ace serves. Starcevich had three aces and Spurgeon had two aces.
The Redettes traveled to Moravia on Thursday night winning the match with scores of 25-22, 25-15 and 27-25.
Centerville will have the week off and return to action at the South Central Conference tournament in Albia on Oct. 14.
