Dance Department starting new classes
By Julie Clark - Sports editor
The Dance Department will be offering two new classes starting this fall.
Jessica Woodward will be teaching cheerleading and poms and Lacey Seay will be teaching tumbling.
“I have been wanting to reintroduce these classes, but I’m really busy with dance so I asked the girls if they would be interested in teaching,” said owner Buffy Hurley.
The girls are no strangers to the competition, both have several years of experience with dance, tumbling and cheerleading.
Cochran started going to cheerleading practice with her mom Kathy when she was in fifth grade and never stopped. Cochran started tumbling when she was four and danced even earlier at the age of three.
The cheer/poms class will be held on Tuesdays after school. They will preform at competition and will also be performing during the Big Red football games and some of the Big Red basketball games and also Pancake Day. “They will wear red and black uniforms so that they can really support the community and be involved,” said Hurley.
The tumblers will meet for practice on Thursdays after school with Seay.
Seay has also been active since she was a child. Seay was a member of Kathy’s Comets at the age of five and when she was nine she competed in the Jr. Olympics.
The tumblers will be competing in meets this winter with individual goals being set when practice starts.
“We really enjoyed and missed teaching,” said the girls. The girls taught while they were in high school, but Hurley dropped the classes when the girls left for college.
The girls also performed in events during high school such as at the Kansas City Chiefs half-time show, Capital One Bowl and the Shrine Bowl.
There are still a few openings for the classes that start in September.
