CORYDON — The Moulton-Udell baseball team overcame a 90-minute rain delay and a 20-minute lightning break to take a 5-3 win over Bluegrass Conference rival Moravia (10-12) in the opening round of Class 1A district play at Corydon on Tuesday.
The Eagles (10-8) advance to play again on tonight, when they’ll return to Corydon to face off against Wayne County. The Falcons defeated Seymour 12-1 in opening round play.
Down 3-2 in the fifth inning, the Eagles’ Dyllan Lawson blasted a solo home run to tie things up. In the sixth, Zach Schoonover knocked out a two-run single with the bases loaded to provide the difference for Moulton-Udell. Zeb Guinn set the Mohawks down in order in the sixth and seventh innings to earn the win on the mound. Guinn scattered six hits and a walk while fanning five batters through seven innings.
Brandon Weilbrenner and Ryan Pinegar each had a double for Moravia, while Blake Weilbrenner and Matt Pfannebecker each notched an RBI. Pfannebecker was saddled with the hard-luck loss on the mound.
