DES MOINES – Several area athletes competed at the state track meet Thursday through Saturday in Des Moines.

The Centerville Big Reds placed 14th in the 3A team standings with 16 points behind outstanding performances from Wallace Carter and Levi Long.

Carter earned 10 team points by winning the discus and three team points with a sixth place finish in the shot put.

Long gave Centerville three team points with a sixth place finish in the 800 meter run.

Logan Danko finished 10th in the 200 meter preliminaries while Brent Ewing crossed the finish line in the 13th spot of the 1,600 meter run for the Big Reds.

The Centerville 4 x 100 meter relay team (Jay Schmidt, Jason Conrad, Ethan Moorman, Danko) was 17th in prelims while the 4 x 200 meter relay team (Schmidt, Conrad, Long, Danko) was 11th and the distance medley team (Jaylon Burgin, Long, Conrad, Ewing) was 14th.

In class 3A girls action, Centerville’s Katie Dekker was sixth in the high jump and 14th in the 400 hurdles while Kaylee Mehrhoff took 19th in the shot put.

“Kate did well at the meet. She took sixth in the high jump and ran a personal best in the 400 hurdles,” commented Centerville Redette head coach Rich Gander. “Her performance at the state meet brings a conclusion to her high school athletic career. It was a pleasure to watch her grow as an athlete and as a person over the last four years. She will continue to have success as she transitions to the college setting next year.

“Kaylee placed 19th in the shot put. She didn't throw as far as she did in regionals, but we expect her to return to the state meet in the future. With qualifying for the Drake Relays and the state meet, Kaylee had a good run this sophomore season,” added Gander.

In class 1A boys competition, Seymour finished 25th in the team standings behind two impressive performances by Ethan Miller.

Miller finished fourth in the long jump and fourth in the high jump for the Warriors.

Chris Welch competed in two events for Moulton-Udell, taking 10th in the high jump and 22nd in the 110 hurdle prelims.
