Big Reds second at SCC golf meet

— CHARITON — The Centerville Big Red golf team competed at the Chariton Invitational on May 3 before making a return trip to Chariton two days later for the South Central Conference golf meet.
The Big Reds finished fourth in the field of seven at the Chariton Invite before taking runner-up honors at the SCC meet. Centerville finished 22 strokes behind conference champion Albia.
Brendyn Hawkins led the Big Reds on May 3, shooting an 80 (40-40) before recording an 82 (41-41) on May 5. Hawkins’ performance earned him all-South Central Conference honors, joining Kevin Fitzpatrick of Albia, Kevin Wynn of Albia and Tanner Perkins of Chariton.
Tyler Gray led the Big Reds at the SCC meet, shooting a 79, which included a 38 during the first round.
“This was Tyler’s best performance of the year,” said Centerville head coach Mike Carney. “This is what I have expected from him this year. He has the ability.”
The Big Reds are scheduled to compete at the sectional golf tournament on Friday at Fairfield. Centerville, Davis County, Fairfield, Fort Madison, Keokuk, Mount Pleasant, Washington and Williamsburg will be in attendance.
