The Indian Hills Falcons split Saturday’s twinbill against Marshalltown Community College, losing game one by one run and winning game two by one run. However, the Falcons bounced back on Sunday with solid pitching for a pair of victories.
Falcons’ starting pitcher Matt Lashlee gave up all five of Marshalltown’s runs, allowing them to jump to an early 5-0 lead after three innings, in game one on Saturday.
Levi Grassley went 1-3 with a homerun. Marshalltown’s pitching staff recorded 10 strikeouts against Falcon batters.
Indian Hills would eventually climb back into the game with a one-run fifth, two-run sixth and a one-run seventh. However, they would record loss number 14 with a 5-4 defeat.
“Starting pitching couldn’t put up a zero in an inning but [Tyler] Sparger kept us in the game with three shutout innings but we came up short in the seventh,” Indian Hills coach Cam Walker said.
Marshalltown led 2-0 after three innings of play in game two, but Indian Hills would bounce back with a four-run fifth inning, sparked by a three-run homerun by Adam Deneke, to go ahead 4-2 after five innings.
Marshalltown would tie the game at 4-4 with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Indian Hills’ Grassley would launch a solo home run to send the Falcons ahead 5-4 in the top of the seventh inning.
“Great outing by [Anthony] Gagliardi,” Walker said. “Grassley got on top of a high fast ball and hit a line drive homerun to left [field] to go ahead in the top of the seventh.”
Gagliardi gave up four hits, four runs and pitched five strike outs in his 5.1 innings to start the game. Jake Stalzer pitched .2 innings to pick up a win after giving up one hit and posting one strikeout.
A.J. McElderry pitched the final inning to record his fifth save of the season.
A complete game performance by Cashtyn DeLeeuw headlined Indian Hills’ 5-2 victory to start of Sunday’s twinbill. DeLeeuw struck out 11 batters while giving up just four hits and two runs.
“DeLeeuw had a great outting and battled all day,” Walker said. “We took advantage of our offensive opportunities.”
Those opportunities came in the fourth and fifth innings. The Falcons scored three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Yulicier Arias went 3-3 with two RBIs and one run scored.
Falcons stayed hot on the mound in game two of Sunday’s action. Jordan Piche pitched a complete game shutout, giving up just two hits and throwing seven strikeouts. The Falcons recorded a run in the first, two in the fifth and one in the sixth en route to their 4-0 victory.
“The story was Jordan Piche and Taylor Ostrich,” Walker said. “Piche was in control for the whole game. Ostrich had a three hit game with two RBIs. Great double-header sweep in conference.”
With the three conference wins against Marshalltown, Indian Hills improves to a 13-14 overall record, while sitting 6-4 in the ICCAC. They trail Iowa Western (28-1, 9-1 in ICCAC) and Marshalltown (10-13, 5-3 in ICCAC).
Indian Hills (11-14) will host Muscatine on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
