The Centerville High School ninth grade boys basketball team improved to 5-1 overall after rattling off three straight wins prior to winter break.

The freshmen defeated Prairie City-Monroe 44-29 on Dec. 13, Eddyville-Blakesburg 46-11 on Dec. 14, and Clarke 48-30 on Dec. 20.

David Harshman led the Big Red scoring against PCM with 10 points while Cody Cowan added nine points. Chris Schacher and Dan McDowell contributed with nine and six rebounds respectively.

“Our bench players were the standouts in this game,” commented CHS coach Matt Kruzich. “Cody, Sawyer [Henderson], and Chris came off the bench and gave us a huge boost in both scoring and rebounding. It’s nice to see that we can count on everyone to contribute to a solid victory.”

Harshman led CHS in the scoring column against Eddyville-Blakesburg with 14 points while Nick Kruzich chipped in with seven points.

“This was our first game with only our freshman rotation and I was pleased with our progress. David had another great game offensively and Daniel dominated the rebounding effort with 12 rebounds,” Kruzich said.

Harshman once again led CHS scorers on Dec. 20 against Clarke with a 12-point effort. Caleb Baker poured in 10 points while McDowell and Schacher added six and five rebounds.

“Balanced scoring and rebounding makes everyone happy, so hopefully we can keep that up. It was nice to see these guys produce a 5-1 record going into break,” added Kruzich.

The Centerville freshmen (5-1) return from winter break Friday when they play host to Chariton in the first game of a 9/JV/V tripleheader at Lakeview, starting at 5 p.m.
