Lunch program serves more than 2,000 meals

For the fourth consecutive year, the Appanoose County Summer Lunch Program provided free meals to children and accompanying adults every weekday from the end of school to the beginning of the new school year. Sponsored by the Appanoose County Ministerial Alliance, hosted by Drake Avenue Christian Church with the assistance of volunteers from other churches, cooks Belinda Potter and Linda Leach served 2,326 total meals for an average of 46 per day. Meals are compliant with USDA guidelines for nutritional standards.
Each day drawings were held for coupons for free merchandise at the following area businesses:  Sonic, Pizza Hut, Raymond’s, Double R and Subway. The children also enjoyed pool passes to the municipal pool. These gifts and donations were greatly appreciated and utilized by the children.
Statistics reveal a great need for the Summer Lunch Program in Appanoose County and fortunately, the program has grown to sustain itself through grants, reimbursable funds and free-will offerings.
The committee for the program is appreciative of the support of the community and pledges to continue as long as there is need, as no child should ever go hungry.
