The supreme spiritual authority

By Pastor Lloyd Johnston First Baptist Church

---- — “When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at His teaching, because He taught as one who had authority and not as their teachers of the law.” Matthew 7:28, 29

These two verses are cited at the end of the “Sermon on the Mount” Mathew 5,6,7. The people were amazed at His teaching. Not because He entertained people, not because He gave them free gifts, not because He was politically correct. No, Jesus amazed people because He spoke with authority. This authority was the Word and Will of the Heavenly Father. The Word of God in a no spin zone is the authority above all authorities.

At a seminary chapel the preacher of the day was speaking about how we “pastors-to-be” could miss the mark of the authority of God’s Word. His remembered catch phrase was: “The thinner the mortar, the harder you have to sling it to make it stick.”

He nailed it! Whether pastor or layperson, we have all authority of heaven and earth IF we trust in God rallying on His authority.

It’s when our focus starts veering elsewhere that we lose credibility with God and with people. You and I may not understand fully everything God says in His Word. That’s great because God is far above total human explanations. Yet, He reveals enough of Himself that we can know and trust His omnipotence. What a great God!

So, instead of wearing ourselves out trying our best to impress people, let’s live out the authority of God’s Word in and through our lives. Others can tell when we live genuine, God-honoring lives. The best outcome is when they seek God in their life. God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is the supreme authority — the only authority for spiritual life.
