Easter's Choices: Pilate made his

---- — “Where do you come from?” [Pilate] asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer. “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?” John 19:9b, 10.

Our verses find Pilate talking to Jesus just hours before Jesus was crucified. As Rome’s representative, Pilate had been approached by those Jews who want Jesus killed. Pilate did what he could to calm the people down and set Jesus free until political pressure was applied. (see v. 12)

Pilate was also “full of himself.” True, as far as the Roman Empire was concerned, he could have let Jesus go and told the Jews to leave Jesus alone. He claimed to have power to free or crucify Jesus. He did not understand that Jesus was carrying out His Father’s plan so that your sins and mine could be forgiven if we repent and confess. Jesus faced the cross for us, not for Himself.

As you came to Resurrection Sunday (Easter) once again, you have made a decision. One choice is to reject, deny or ignore the work of God through the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. The other choice is realizing you are not in charge of creation, life and all activities physical and spiritual. You realize your need for a loving merciful savior to forgive your sins and direct your life. This second choice is God’s plan.

Do you recognize and accept who Christ is and what He has done for you? If you have, it will be a joyous Resurrection Sunday every day. Pilate made his choice. You and I have made ours — trust in self or trust in Jesus as savior.
