A void in Godly leadership
By Rev. Terry Chapman
Last Sunday was Father’s Day. I used a text on Sunday evening that was applicable to fathers, men in general and ladies as well. But it is especially for men in our culture. The text is I Chronicles 12. This is the story of David after he is anointed king over Saul. Men from Israel begin to come to his side to help take over Jerusalem and set David up as king.
Each tribe sends thousands of warriors to David. Some tribes send as many as fifty thousand. The tribe of Benjamin sent three thousand.
That is especially interesting since that was the family of Saul himself. But one tribe, Issachar, sent only a few hundred. But they did not send warriors from the army, they sent the chiefs of their clans. They sent LEADERS!
You have heard the old saying, too many chiefs and not enough Indians? Well the same can be true if there are too many Indians and not enough chiefs! There are many churches, political offices, civic organizations and other groups who have people that are willing to help, but there is a void of true leadership.
The sons of Issachar understood that as good as the soldiers were, if there were no leaders, the army would be ineffective. I wonder how many people will read this column who have recently stepped down from a place of leadership saying, “let someone else take a turn.” There may not be a SOMEONE.
You may be crippling your church or group if you do not step up and use the gift God has given you. There are people who are natural born leaders. If you are one, LEAD. The church needs you. The community needs you. Your family needs you.
