The 20th week of the Healthy Appanoose Challenges are printed below. The free program can be joined anytime throughout the year. Log in at the Centerville-Rathbun Lake Area Chamber of Commerce at www.centerville-ia.com to record challenges completed. Phase 1 has now ended and Phase 2 is in session.
Day 134 — May 28 — Share about saving energy. Do you shut off the lights as soon as you leave a room? Switch off your computer at the end of a workday? Wash your clothing in the coolest water possible? Whatever your method for saving energy, share it here. The benefits of saving energy are numerous. Saving energy leads to lower utility bills, meaning more money for you.
Day 135 — May 29 — Lift your torso and leg eight times. This challenge will be more comfortable if you do it on a carpeted floor, towel, or mat. Lie on your right side with your legs straight and stacked one on top of the other. Put your right elbow on the floor and use your right hand to support your head. Put your left palm on the floor in front of your chest. Use your left hand to push up off the floor, and raise your upper body (including your head and right arm) as you raise your left leg as high as you can. Return to the start position and repeat three times. Switch position so you’re lying on your left side and repeat four times.
Day 136 — May 30 — Try smaller silverware. Before eating one meal or snack today that requires silverware, set your place with a spoon or fork (or both!) that is smaller than the one you typically use. For example, switch from a dinner fork to a salad one, or use a teaspoon instead of a tablespoon or soup spoon. Kids’ cutlery works, too! (If you only have one size silverware, take a smaller spoonful or forkful with each bite instead). Using smaller silverware forces you to slow way down. Many of us eat too quickly and finish our food long before the brain gets the message that the stomach is full.
