The 18th week of the Healthy Appanoose Challenges are printed below. The free program can be joined anytime throughout the year. Log in at the Centerville-Rathbun Lake Area Chamber of Commerce at www.centerville-ia.com to record challenges completed. Phase 1 has now ended and Phase 2 is in session.
Day 120 — May 14 — Figure out a figure eight. Find an open area in a room or hallway, or head outdoors. Jog for a count of 10. Crouch until you can touch the ground with your right hand. Pivot your body around your right arm until you’re facing your starting point. While you’re turning, keep your fingers on the floor and your arm as straight as possible. Jog back to where you started and complete the figure eight pattern by pivoting around your left arm. Repeat one more figure eight. The fancy footwork in this exercise improves your agility. Better agility means your muscles can react more quickly when you’re stopping, starting or changing direction. This can help you stay on your toes when maneuvering through a crowd, airport or busy grocery store.
Day 121 — May 15 — Plan for some non-food fun. Do you catch up with friends over brunch? Grab ice cream with family on warm evenings? Treat yourself after a long week at your favorite pizza place? The next time you’re planning a day or evening out, choose an activity that isn’t food-focused. Instead, plan on catching a local musician, taking a walk or exploring a museum or landmark in your town. Dining out is often the default activity when we’re making plans or rewarding ourselves. But, the downtime can often come with a side of the high salt, sugar and fat found on many restaurant and fast food menus. Explore alternatives to dining out for a fun outing where you’re not faced with tough food choices.
