Udell School reunion held in Centerville

The Daily Iowegian

---- — Forty-seven attended the Udell Alumni Gathering on June 15 at the Drake Avenue Christian Church for an enjoyable evening of reminiscing. The school colors of purple and gold were prevalent in the table decorations.

As tradition would have it, Lawrence Powell (class of ‘46) led the group with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by prayer and blessing the meal, catered by Hy-Vee, by Max Batterson. Memorial time mentioned those we lost in 2012 and 2013 — Ruth (Spurgeon) Burger, Gertrude Utterback Culbertson, Elaine Salladay, Carletta (Whisler) Orelup and brother, Donald Whisler…Billy passed away also of that family…he attended Unionville, Wendall Kratzer, Mildred (Carr) Vallejo, Hazel (Edwards) Streever, Louis Glasgow, Virgene (Price) Johnson and Shorty Burger.

The classes of 1938 (75 years); 1943 (70 years); 1948 (65 years); 1953 (60 years); and 1958 (55 years) were honored and several were willing to take the mic and tell about their lives. The class of 1943 graduated were 100 percent —Wilma Burger and guests, daughter Shirley Schlotter and Deanna Brinegar and Opal (Miller) Hodges.

Orris and Patty Powell and Beverly (Deahl) Brinegar headed up the class of 1948. The class of 1953 was well represented — Shirley (Rumans) Brooke and daughter Judy Sandstrom; Shirley (Morlan) and Marvin Morris; Ray and Ruth Howard (Vice President and Treasurer); and Dowe Scott. Marjorie (Silliman) Gale and Marilyn (Salladay) Kirkland had made reservations but were not able to attend. Marlene (Hopkins) Frich’s plans to get to the gathering from West Virginia didn’t work out either. The “1958” section held Larry and Joan Hedgecock, Lanny and Eva Doggett, Barbara (Houser) Padavich and, although she wasn’t a Udell graduate, but attended Udell (her parent’s ran the store), Pauletta (Henderson) and John Cridlebaugh, who came the farthest to attend — 153 miles! Bruce Duty of Mexico, Mo. also came quite a distance — 140 miles.

Others in attendance were: Barbara (Spurgeon) and Charles (Chuck) Bare, who gave the invocation and Barbara’s son, Chris Kesterson; Max and Kathryn (Clancy) Batterson (President); Lois and Kathy Cridlebaugh (Historian); Lee Engle; Joyce (Hopkins) Grosvenor; Marjorie (Hinton) and Richard Hopkins; Pam and Ron Marvin (Neal Waggoner’s daughter); Donna (Koehler) Maurer, Fern (Engle) and Walter Paris; Earl and Betty Powell; Jan (Mrs. Larry) Spurgeon, Jack and Betty Walker, Larry and Sheila Walker and Larry Whisler.

Several of the guests enjoyed the “door prizes” — the centerpieces, including a beautiful bouquet of spring flowers taken home by Shirley (Rumans) Brooke.

The next Udell Alumni will meet June 21, 2014.
