---- — Kris Laurson and Bill Thom of Appanoose County received a 2013 Governor’s Volunteer Award from Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds and Gov. Terry Branstad during a special recognition ceremony held June 28 at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa. The two were nominated by Seneca Area Agency on Aging for volunteer service.
The Governor’s Volunteer Awards program was created in 1982, with inaugural awards presented in 1983. What began as a small program only available to state government agencies has expanded over the years and now provides all Iowa nonprofit, charitable and government organizations with an easy way to honor their volunteers with a prestigious state-level recognition award.
Several hundred volunteers are recognized each year with awards in one of several categories: Individual, Group, Length of Service or Disaster Volunteer.
"Volunteerism is an important part go the state's future and well-being," said Gov. Branstad. "I am honored to have the opportunity to recognize the people of our great state who continue the tradition of neighbor helping neighbor and work tirelessly to improve their communities. Collectively, Iowa's volunteers contribute to our ranking among the top three states in the nation for our volunteer rate."
"The governor and I sincerely congratulate all of this year's award recipients," said Lt. Gov.Reynolds. "All are very deserving of the honor and we thank them for their tremendous and selfless efforts and devotion to make a difference."
"I am very pleased to honor those who have given the precious gift of their time to make a difference and enrich lives in communities all across Iowa,” said Gov. Branstad. “I never tire of meeting volunteers and hearing about the wonderful accomplishments they contribute to making this state great.”
Kris Laurson and BIll Thom were honored with an Individual Volunteer Award by Connie Holland of the Seneca Area Agency on Aging for their service and activities with the 10 County Area Board of Directors.
