Forty alumni and friends of Udell gathered June 21

The reunion held many conversations of warm memories through the years. To give a bit of Udell history, the school was built in 1914 and the first graduate was William J. Gorden in 1916. The last students graduated in 1959. Only one of those 1959 students could attend the reunion, Judy (Hofer) Martin and Archie and daughter, Deb Stutzel. Two 1959 grads, Ralph and Lana Clark and Donna (Koehler) Mauer usually attend the reunion.

Alumni present were:

1938 — Richard Burger and wife, Ann, music teacher at Udell;

1943 — Wilma (Kirby) Brinegar and Deanna Brinegar;

1946 — Lawrence Powell and Dorothy, Waldo (Perry) “Tuff” King;

1948 — Mary Francis (Robertson) Blew and Julie Ann Goode, Helen (Gale) Gomis, Beverly (Deahl) Brinegar;

1952 — Fern (Engle) Paris and Walter;

1953 — Raymond Howard (Treas) and Ruth, Marjorie (Silliman) Gale;

1954 — Barbara (Spurgeon) Bare and Charles (Chuck), Kris Kesterson and Lori Sacco, Max Batterson and wife;

1955 — Shirley Hinerman, Kathryn (Clancy) Batterson, Pres.;

1956 — Larry Walker and Sheila, Joyce (Hopkins) Grosvenor;

1958 — Roger Labertew, Larry Hedgecock and Joan, Lanny Doggett and Iva.

Also in attendance were: James Gorden from California; Lois (Mrs. John) Cridlgebaugh and Kathy Cridlebaugh of Centerville, historian; Bruce Duty from Missouri; and Jan (Mrs. Larry) Spurgeon, who makes sure the group is comfortable at the Drake Avenue Christian Church. We were sorry that 1952 graduate and wife Fred and Sibylle Nungesser from Minnesota, were not able to attend.

Memorial time honored alumni no longer with us — 1935 Reva Mae (Morlan) Burgess and Arnold Wagner; 1938 Helen (Deahl) Crow Mapes; 1940 Virgene (Price) Johnson and Virginia (Scarcliff) Zellezng. Alumni and friends also honored Bob Well, who taught at Udell.

Regular attendees Shirely (1953) and Marvin Morris were kept away by poor health, as was Lee Engle (1957), Opal Hodges (1943) and Larry and Martha Whisler (1956). Marjorie (1951) (Hinton) and Richard Hopkins often attend plus others and all were missed. We’re hoping next year on June 20, 2015, they’ll be back in attendance.

The Iowegian wants readers to think about the solicitation ordinance that will prevent groups or individuals from entering a roadway to solicit money. The Centerville City Council in June by a 5-0 vote passed the first reading of just such an ordinance. Public pressure and during a subsequent special meeting, the council voted 3-2 to table the ordinance. A second special meeting to discuss the solicitation ordinance is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 at City Hall. So, the question of the week is, "Do you or do you not support the ordinance to prevent solicitation of funds in city streets?"

A. I support the ordinance
B. I do not support the ordinance
C. Not sure
