Rain, rain go away ... so we can plant!

---- — Howdy everybody.

Well I hope we all survived the rain. I don’t have the totals for how much rain it ended up being in total, but wow! It’s sad that we have to go from one to the other, drought or flooding are not the best things we need but we take what we get right? I hope we can all get our planting in and that this turns out to be a very productive year for us all. As I drive around I see a lot of people digging and planting their home gardens and I for one am happy to see all the green out there. Doug has been on a tree kick this year and let me tell you that as soon as some of the fruit and nut trees start producing, I will have enough to start my own market. Along those lines I just want to mention the Farmers Market in Centerville started Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at the courthouse. There is always a great selection of yummy stuff to buy. Hopefully we can get our local farmers market going this year.

I thought I would put a super easy summer dish out this week and it’s so good and light for those hot days.

Key West Lime Grilled Chicken

Ingredients

4 boneless Chicken Breasts

3 Tb. soy sauce

3 Tb. honey

1 Tb. vegetable oil

Juice of one lime

1 tsp. minced garlic

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Make marinade by combining all ingredients except chicken in a large gallon size bag. Add the chicken to the bag and let all of it marinate for at least 1-2 hours.

You can grill this on the BBQ or on an indoor grilling pan but I think it’s best on the grill. Cook 6-8 minutes on each side until the chicken is cooked. Check to make sure any juices are clear and chicken has reached internal temp of 165 degrees. Serve with a side of rice and grilled vegetables.

Don’t forget Exline Church of Christ Vacation Bible School. It starts Monday, June 17 thru Friday, June 21 from 1-3:30 p.m. each day. This years theme is God’s Great Big Fish Bowl. On Sunday, June 23 at 10 a.m. there will be a program put on and then there will be a celebration dinner at noon provided by the church ladies. Have your children and grandchildren attend this fun and learning camp. Sign up sheets are located at the Exline Store.

To all of the people that received notices for property clean up from the city they have extended the completion date by 30 days. Otherwise the city will do it and the charges for their cleanup will be added to your property taxes.

Also once again we need to mention dogs at large! There are by-laws that the city and county have in place about this. We understand that some of these dogs are strays and have been dumped but most of the problems are coming from local dogs and owners that think it’s okay to let them run around all the time and anywhere they want. I myself have lost livestock over this and I know others that have as well. Yesterday I had five dogs in my yard! They are forming packs and the danger of someone getting hurt is enormous! School is out and small children are often a target for these packs as well as adults, livestock and family pets are in danger! Even if your dog is nice or you think they wouldn’t hurt a flea, the pack mentality will change that in an instant. Keep you dogs on a leash or secure at all times. I would love to be able to walk my dogs without the fear of attack.

On a lighter note a group of our local women went shopping in Des Moines for fabric for various projects that they are working on. Maryann, Ruth, Frieda and Peggy had a great afternoon enjoying each others company and getting great deals.

Jeremy Carlsten has taken a position in Des Moines to work for the state in the student loan department and his fiancee Kayla Calvert is finding work as an RN. They moved this week to a beautiful apartment complex with pools, exercise room, media room and believe it or not a 9 hole putt putt golf and a normal 9 hole course. Boy what a life!

Since it was the first Wednesday of the month, it was the birthday party at the Exline Store. Our birthdays and anniversaries for the month of June are; Anniversaries — Charles and Marge Conger, Randall’s 71st, Dustin and Rachel Garner and Bill and Cryssie Garner; and Birthdays — Dorothy Haines, Rick Sharp, Sharon Burns, Michele Carlsten, Cryssie Gardner and Dustin Gardner.
